There is often a special for half off sushi, and other menu and drinks. But the last two times I went the waiters weren't clear and the final bill hasn't matched the expectations. Tonight the waiter stated that the special had changed since last time. Also, tonight several items that were ordered had to be requested a couple times.

I came with 6 people. The check included a long list itemizing each of the 28 items ordered, and a separate credit card receipt for signature. The credit card receipt stated: Purchase: $310 Tip: ______ Total: ______ The service was horrible, so I decided to tip "only" $40. I wrote $40 in the Tip blank and $350 in the Total blank. The waiter did NOT say: "Sir, are you aware that gratuity is already added?" The next morning, I awoke (with a hangover :-) ) and looked at the ticket and discover that the food and drink was only $265.36, and that they had added $44.64 as an Automatic Gratuity; Thus, the total gratuity I ended up UNINTENTIONALLY paying was $84.64!!! They made no attempt to notify me. This probably happens quite often, as it appears they intentionally set people up not to notice. By intentional, what I mean is they could have set their POS system to print a credit card receipt WITHOUT an option for tip and/or they could have instructed their staffers to specifically notify patrons that tip is already added. They did neither. It is astounding how much money they make over the course of a busy night from people unintentionally double tipping. Sure, some people will say that I should have looked at my ticket carefully. But who looks at a 28-line item ticket line by line in front of 6 friends? Who looks at a 28-line item ticket carefully after drinking several bottles of saki? I go out to relax and have a good time, assuming I can trust people not to stick it to me when I let my guard down. I was wrong.

Such a sad thing to see a restaurant go from one of your favorite places to one of the worst restaurants you've ever visited. About two years ago things started to go downhill at this place. First it was a weird infestation of some sort of small gnat that was swarming around the hibachi lights. Then problems with prices at bill time not matching the menu. Then the service started to slack off simple things like, not seeming happy to be there, rude answers to questions, and general laziness. Which brings me to my last experience. We arrive to a completely empty restaurant on a Saturday night. No one is at the front and one worker is leaned against the sushi bar using her cellphone. The host comes out and greets us and seats us. Only gives us a food menu which is one sheet of laminated. He then asked for our drink orders. After ordering he tells us that he only has one hibachi chef so we might have to wait a little. ??? Now the kicker. He comes back with the drinks and tells us they are out of yellowtail, scallops, and lobster. No apologies and by the way we are out of to go cups for your kids and since one child only wanted soup we had to pay an up charge on the other one's meal in case they shared. My kids are 2 and 5. Then I tasted the draft ichiban beer and it was flat. So we paid for the drinks and left. I just didn't see it getting better from there. Host wasn't even surprised when we walked out. Maybe they like it empty.

This had to be the absolute worst service of any restaurant I have ever been to. When we walked in, the hostess seemed completely baffled that we wanted to sit at a hibachi table. After about 5 minutes, she started to lead us to the table when some other guy yelled at her to not seat us and to wait. (The restaurant was empty by the way). Once we were finally seated, it took forever to get drinks. Then, the hibachi chef comes out and is about to cook and we hadn't even gotten our soup or salad yet. When he checked the orders, two were wrong and he didn't have the right food on the cart. When he finished cooking, we told him he never gave my daughter her chicken and he said the grill was getting cold so they would cook it in the back. My daughter got her dinner after everyone else had finished. The couple seated at the table with us had to go to the bar to get a drink refill. It also took a very long time to get the check and when we did, the waitress still hadn't returned for the credit card after 10 minutes so I flagged down the hostess and asked her to run the card. Five minutes later, the hostess still hadn't returned and our waitress finally ambled over. When I told her I gave my card to the hostess, she said "not the old lady?" When I said yes, she said "oh, fu**". The only saving grace was my husband had already taken our daughter outside. When one of my party told her it was because she never came back, the waitress got an attitude and said she was busy and had six tables. Meanwhile, there were at least three other waitresses and maybe eight occupied tables. The food wasn't that good either. The portions were so small that we all finished our meal and no one needed a to go box, which is unheard of when we go to a hibachi restaurant. I ordered the scallop dinner. At every other hibachi place I have been to, the serve the large scallops that are the size of a silver dollar. Here, I got 10 scallops and they were dime sized. This very well might have been the worst dining experience I have ever had.

The staff was nice but seemed like it was everyone's first day as a waiter. Our waitress literally didn't know anything about anything - not even the price of the sake we were interested in. They ran out of sunomono - OK. But ran out of asparagus? Ran out of tobiko? C'mon... those are staples, man. You may as well run out of rice. Menu is really limited. You better like spicy tuna and tempura bc some form of that makes up more than half the menu. They brought our mains first and the apps second. I think bc they forgot we ordered any. The steamed vegetable app was exactly what I'd get if I ordered it from the dirty Chinese restaurant on the corner. Broccoli, cabbage, carrots - abundance of each indirectly proportional to cost. Weird ambiance for a sushi place. Sports on big screen TVs... Why come back here with so many other options?

Terrible. So sad... This used to be a great place. Now the sushi is not edible. What happened???

    (1)
  • JR M.

Where do I even start? I guarantee this place will close its doors within 3 months or less which is sad because it used to be the place to be. For starters one of their AC units had a bucket under it that was only catching about hlf the water that was leaking from it so the floor was saturated. Then we placed our order which we were told they were out of asparagus so we had to change one of our rolls, no big deal. Our appetizer comes out, vegetable tempura, it was practically onion rings with a couple slices of sweet potato, and aa single piece of broccoli. I dipped my first piece in what I thought was the traditional sweet tasting sauce that is served with this dish, turns out it was straight soy sauce so salty I couldn't eat it. Tempura is supposed to be a very light tasting dish, ours was drenched in grease. Half way through stomaching our horrible appetizer the sushi chef comes to our table to tell us they are out of eel, which 2 of our 3 rolls contained, I was trying to be patient as we were both very hungry and agreed for him to substitute tuna in its place. When the plate of sushi finally came to us there was no wasabi or pickled ginger on tthe plate, I kindly asked the server for these two items so he brings the plate back with about a pea size portion of wasabi and no ginger. Apparently they are out of ginger as well, so at this point I had enough ad was afraid to eat raw fish from this place. I asked to speak with a manager who did come to the table and proceeded to argue with me that EVERY Oriental market she went to was out oo ginger and wouldn't have any for months. She also said she brought in two bunches of asparagus and couldn't understand hhow they were out?? I won't even get into the sign outside the front door that says 40% off sushi from 8pm-2am, because the owner insisted on charging me for the tempura, which refectec no discount. Avoid this place at all costs and hopefully another good sushi bar will move in this location as soon as they go out of business. Oh and its one star rating is only because there is no way to leave zero stars!!

There are only a few decent sushi spots in St Pete (sadly), but Hiro's is certainly not one of them anymore. Their daily half-off sushi special is obviously built around "you get what you pay for". Most disappointing takeout order I've ever picked up - rainbow roll with about an inch and a half worth of tuna placed on top and an atom bomb roll that had some seriously questionable salmon. Extremely small pieces of fish that didn't taste fresh. I always expect sushi takeout orders to slack a bit in presentation, but tonight seemed like a joke. Apparently they just had a management change. Hiro's has declined so much to the point that it would not be missed.

Do NOT eat here! Food is poor to average, way overpriced. David our server was attentive and friendly, however, unable or unwilling to resolve our issues. The owner Jeannie is the problem here as she refused to honor their advertised offers of 1/2 price apps and sushi that is clearly posted on the website and the bottom of the ticket printed from their own POS. When we asked Jeannie to adjust our bill to the advertised special, she blamed her son Diego and refused to adjust the check, she went off on me when said 4 people quit today and she wasn't supposed to be there anyway. Jeannie lost it when we asked to speak to Diego indicating she can't get ahold of him. Hiros, You should revisit your business practices and honor your own specials. Half price is stated on your website as well as the ticket printed from your POS. You do realize customers don't care about your personal problems or business shortcomings. Your tactics of bait and switch are not only unethical but illegal. If you cannot afford to honor your own specials don't run any or close the doors. Jeannie you should be ashamed of how you speak to customers and employees, treat others as you wish to be treated!

Every time I down to visit family in the Tampa area, they tell me that Hiro's has an awesome half price deal after 10pm. I figured this time I'd take advantage of it. We did take-out instead of eating in since no one really wanted to sit down at a restaurant, especially one that's supposedly hopping at night. I'm actually glad we didn't eat there because when we walked in to pick up our food, the music was overly loud. Loud enough to where you feel like you're at a club yelling to have a casual conversation with your friends. Meh. I ordered three rolls and a miso soup with the total amounting to around $18. Really, the half price deal wasn't bad at all, especially since each roll came with eight pieces. So doing the math, 24 rolls and a soup for $18 is a steal The quality wasn't bad for the price I paid. I didn't really have any issue with the fish or what was in each roll, but it did seem like the rolls fell apart a little too easily. Aside from that, everything was great, even the miso soup was surprisingly good. I'm sure if we're in the mood for sushi again this week and it's past 10pm we'll probably hit up Hiro's.

Heads up, they got rid of their loyalty card rewards. It would have been nice to know since we were racking up the points for a free meal! Good thing the second Hook's location opened up right around the corner! Bye Hiro's, we had a good run.

I used to go to Hiros when late night meant loud music and half off sushi rolls that were a GOOD size. However, stopped going because we heard that their sushi wasn't very legit. After hearing it was under new management, some friends and I decided to check it out again. What a mistake!!! If I could give it zero stars, I WOULD!! To begin, it took about 10 minutes just to get seated. The old lady/hostess stood there and ignored us, talking to a random guy, until finally seating us in a pretty filled room. From there, it all continued to go downhill. After ordering drinks from the waitress, she took forever to return to the table with them. Then, when seeing the menu, I was surprised by how small it was! Perhaps it was because my group (3) came a little later and had a different menu than earlier. I ordered stir fry with noodles and shrimp, and my friends got hibachi and sushi. However, when we went to order we ran into a problem. They were 'currently' not serving hibachi. The menu just got smaller. Then, when delivering my 'stir fry' they gave me replacement noodles because the normal ones were out and all I got was plain noodles with a side of shrimp for 16 dollars. The sushi was tiny and looked like it was made with canned tuna. Service was slow, I had my drink refilled maybe once the 2 hours I endured dinner there, and the bill was wayyyyy too much for the quality and size of the food. Please, please don't go here!!! Go spend 50 bucks anywhere else. I wish I could turn back time and never come here, but at least I know now!!!

Super disappointed with the recent changes. Not only is the menu MUCH smaller but service took over 2.5 hours AND the appetizer and drink order was messed up. It was a Friday night but NOT by any means Packed.

We came in for lunch on a Thursday. It wasn't busy and we had good service. The Sushi is the best choice. I had the teriyaki chicken it was okay. The sauce was flavorless. It came with stir fried veggies and jasmine rice which was lovely.

It's nice to have a sushi/hibachi place this close to home. I just wish it felt cleaner. I ordered one of the speciality rolls (heavenly roll) and the chef's specialty roll (volcano roll). Both were delicious. The chef was nice. He kept up the conversation and still let me read the news. Also, the waitress and host were very cordial and attentive. I really enjoyed my lunch... ...Then the check came in a dirty, oil coated folder. I suddenly realized why there were flies around the bar and host stand. Good price, though.

Used to be my favorite sushi place in St. Pete for both pricing and taste but has completely gone downhill. Ordered a Phoenix roll (used to be my favorite) and found a mysterious seed in it??? Gave the place another try like a fool and ordered a cooked salmon roll. Bit into cooked salmon only to discover it was still raw inside :(( Heart broken goodbye Hiros, I'll cherish our memories forever. (Sobs)

Normally, after having worked in the service industry for many years myself, I'm pretty understanding of poor service/ kitchen issues. However, my waitress was probably the worst I've ever had. She checked on us a lot at the beginning and once in the middle. I said, "I am still deciding". She didn't come by the table again until it was to kick us out. I tried flagging her down twice and got no response. She didn't even have the decency to tell us when the kitchen was closing if we wanted last calls. I usually go here when I'm in town visiting family for a decent deal, but it's not worth my time anymore.

We went here after moving to the area when our landlord RAVED about this place. We were 2 of MAYBE 8 people in the whole place, and it took FOREVER to get our food. They "ran out" of conch and octopus, so they substituted it with shrimp and tuna. (( wouldn't substitute the price though!)) The sushi wasn't anything to write home about, and I would not eat here again. Cheap sushi, cheap service. You get what you pay for.

extremely disorganized. walked in and asked if one of us could have hibachi and the other sushi was told by the hostess that it was her first day and to hold on while the walked away. came back 5 minutes and said she couldn't find the chef and stared at us. then the manager (?) came up and was asked and she asked us to hold on while she checked. came back and said that yes it wasn't a problem. seated and hibachi guy never got an order for me so he does his act for the others. then a waitress comes up after about 5 minutes and asks if we want a drink. we order and i say "i'm not sure if the hostess told you, but i'd like hibachi while my wife has sushi". waitress tells me it's her first day and walks away. another waitress comes and takes my order. i get a show all to myself! chef was great. fun and very interactive. in the middle of the show he starts saying to anyone that worked there that walked by "i need my head chef" and finally the manager comes over and he whispers to her "i need my onions and my (something else). so then her gets his full setup and and i get the rest of my order.... out of order... but whatever. the meal was good. the food was good. people were polite, but just ridiculously unorganized. then the bill comes and it has 18% gratuity added on for the two of us and they make no mention of it. then they just gave me my credit card slip with the tip line and still made no mention of the gratuity that they added on. they weren't rude or anything, but need to be run better and they should tell if you they added the tip. might be back... but probably not.

I was excited to go to this sushi restaurant. I recently moved to the area, and it got mediocre reviews. I will give any restaurant a try. Especially a sushi restaurant. I'm sorry to say, I won't return. Poor inexperienced servers. I blame that on management. Less than descent quality seafood. My sisters sushi was warm and tasted rancid. Also, we received a sushi roll with shredded cheddar cheese on it.. Really? Cheddar cheese? Oh! Did I forget to mention we didn't order it. Taco Bell. Anyone?

The building & staff... This is a very clean and spacious restaurant. I guess the space is necessary because this place is essentially a club in the evenings. The staff is nice enough, though attentive isn't quite the word I'd use for them. The drinks... The wines that I've had here are good. My friends have all always loved the cocktails as well. The food... I actually really like the sushi here. Reading some of the reviews I figured I wouldn't, but it's good! Their soft shell crab roll is my favorite one, but I've had a variety of others here and liked them all. Their spring rolls are quite scrumptious as well. Overall, I've been happy with Hiro's when I've visited. I think all that's left for me to do is show up on a Friday night or when the lot is packed and party (while eating sushi?).

Came to Hiro's today 4.29.15 after sitting at the bar for less then 10mins. a bug (similar to a roach) crawled on my menu, so I used a glass to capture the bug so I could show the owner. I walked over to the manager her name is Ginny, to show her the bug I trapped in the glass. She acted as if it was a pet and said "oh its just a little bug" never apologized. She took the glass and walked in the back then she had the audacity to return and put the glass back on the counter. Thanks to the great bartender Penny she removed the glass and apologized for the experience I was having. So as I write this review another little net/fruit fly was on the soy sauce. Not a good experience and the owner sucks, she does not have good customer service skills

DO NOT GO HERE--THEY SERVE ROTTEN FOOD. I ordered sushi from here last night. Firstly it smelled so strongly of rotten fish I hesitated to try to eat it. But I was really hungry, so I tried a bite of the crunch roll. The fish was definitely old/rotten/decaying, the 'crunch' part tasted like an old rubbery egg. This was literally the nastiest sushi I have ever eaten in my entire life. Do not eat here or else you will be vomiting rotten food the entire night. See below for an article citing 233 violations in 2014 regarding food safety and cleanliness at this restaurant. So gross. No one should risk their health by eating here. abcactionnews.com/money/…

I am new in town, and was looking for a nice sushi restaurant to bring my boyfriends birthday to. I called ahead for a reservation for 6-9 people at 8pm. We got there only to be told they had no non-hibachi tables, nor did they have any tables in the hibachi show section. I was pretty upset as another table that said they had a reservation was sat right away in front of us in line. They found us a spot, at a hibachi table where we would just not have a show. It was very awkward for a party of 7 to sit in a straight line with no show. We waited almost 20 minutes for anyone to take our drink orders, and the waiter that brought them back 15 minutes later didn't know what each drink was or where they belonged. It was the same with the food, a different waiter had no idea what each plate was and who it belonged to. They looked similar, so neither did we. They had no desserts to offer when I asked what I could purchase to serve as a "birthday cake." The food was overall mediocre. The waiters had no suggestions for us, and I honestly think they forgot about us all together a few times, as we weren't receiving a show. We spent 2 hours there and were never again asked for another drink order. It was not a busy time, they sat us in front of a family with children party when we were clearly there as an adult birthday. They only yielded the families complaints about the noise and drinking. Again, as a birthday party of 7 young adults, we were looking for a good time, and prime customers for this establishment. If they would have catered to us, we would have spent a fortune. Don't ever take a party here.

We used to come here quite often and had never anything to complain. Hiro's used to be a hotspot for Sushi, but not anymore. There were 6 people in this restaurant today, and we had to wait 45 minutes for two sushi rolls. The quality is still good but not as it used it used to be, and now that they 50% 10-Close is not there anymore, it's not worth the price. Do yourself a favor and eat elsewhere.

This place has two things going for it: half price sushi after 10:00 pm and a fun open layout which is probably what attracts the 20-something's. It's not high quality sushi. More rice than fish. I didnt like the menu bc most things were fried or tempura and i stay away from that. But It's one of the very few places outside of downtown St Pete actually open after 9 and if you're paying half price on a Friday/Saturday night then it's not a bad place if you want an alternative to late night fast food. But be prepared to wait and wait and then be prepared for bad service. My boyfriend and I came in on a Friday night and there was already a line. After 30 mins they started throwing couples into groups at an empty hibachi table. Aaaawkward. The cool thing about this place is the layout. A large bar area takes center stage at this restaurant; its bar is larger than any other sushi joint I've seen. The have at least a dozen bar stools and booths around the bar for sushi eaters. They have 3 hibachi tables nestled on the left. No Asian theme here; just unremarkable modern decor.

This place was in a very new building and felt extremely clean and cavernous. I don't like sushi but the other guests in my party are fanatics and said it was 'okay.' I like the lunch special that included chicken, rice, freshly sautéed veggies and also came with soup and salad. Unfortunately, everything tasted sort of bland albeit still edible, and the price can't be beat!

I really wanted to like this restaurant because it is close to my job. Unfortunately, the sushi was average and so was the service. It wasn't awful and it certainly didn't make me sick, but it was not memorable at all and I have not had a desire to be back since. My co-workers felt the same way and so we have found other locations to satisfy our lunch time sushi cravings.

Awful! My friend and I came in and they sat us down. We waited for 30 minutes and the two waiters who were taking care of all of other customers around us (even those who came after us) completely ignored us. We were never acknowledged once. I have never experienced such horrible service. We left and told them how no one said a word to us and they just let us go. Seriously I laughed because it was so bad. I never write reviews either. Not a good place.

When I first discovered this place I was like "oooo, ahhhh" and everything was great...for awhile. It felt like the more I came, the suckier the service got, the longer it took to get seated, and the longer it took for the food to come out. Then one day, new management! At first I was skeptical, but saw that the half off sushi starts earlier (4:30pm). I was really happy about that. It was even available for take out. I ate there a couple of times after the new management took over. And service was still kind of slow. Oh, and beware... BEWARE. They let you order half off sushi for take out but charge you a mandatory 18% tip which I was not happy about. They didn't even tell me I had to tip beforehand! I only found out by the receiptgave me. When I asked the slow old lady about it, she said "oh its so that the sushi makers can get SOMETHING you know?" As if they don't get paid a salary. I thought tips were meant for people who serve you when you dine in?? This is the only place I know of so far that charges you a mandatory tip for take out. I'm also not a fan of the old hostess lady. Man is she slow as heck at EVERYTHING. This place is not what it used to be and I'm super bummed about it because it was always my go to place for sushi. I haven't been back for awhile and do not plan on coming back anytime soon. If anyone is looking for any other good sushi places I highly reccomend Ichiban St Pete or Hook's.

Disappointing, but I probably shouldn't have expected much. Ended up coming here because I had a certificate for Social next door, which had closed down. At this point, we were at our second or third stop and we were tired of looking. Therefore, we saw an open sushi place and walked in. I think I was expecting more based on how busy it was, but that was probably stupid of me. Most of the people here were pretty young, and not that people in their early 20s (or younger) wouldn't know good sushi, but it became clear that this was simply a late night place for people to go to eat something other than taco bell. It's cool that its a late night sushi place - love the idea - the food and service could just be a lot better. We were sat at one of the hibachi tables, which apparently weren't being used for anything other than sushi service at this point. They just threw people down at these tables, and again, there was nothing wrong with that except the fact it ended up meaning servers were double, triple or quadruple sat. They just couldn't handle it. I probably shouldn't blame the servers for the hostess' or management's mismanagement. And I would like to be understanding - they were slammed and needed to get tables sat - but you shouldn't seat tables at the expense of good service. In any event, we waited a long time for everything. On to the food. We only got a couple of rolls. They were okay - a spicy tuna and I honestly can't remember the other one. Heavy on the rice, and not all that tasty. Not bad mind you, just not really good sushi, and certainly not good enough to overcome the service. The restaurant itself is wide open and spacious, which is great unless you're looking for intimacy. Also, and I've complained about this at other places, but I hate the unfinished ceiling look. Paint it all as purple or black or whatever as you want - I can still see the rafters and AC venting and sprinkler system. It's just ugly to me. I'm sure no one here cares about the ceiling, but it bothers me. Anyway, really mediocre late night sushi. Better for you than a trip to taco bell, but not all that good.

Mixed emotions here (sorry Mike), last friday night was a completely different experience than what I am used to back when Hiros first open. It has been 3 yrs since I have been here so to be fair I will do a comparison from years ago when this place first open. The way Hiro's is operated has changed and now has a late night crowd which looks like a more diverse young crowd. When Hiro's place first opened it catered to more of an older and family crowd where you can come and celebrate your child's birthday. Back than the staff was very attentive and very efficient. Arriving at 10:30pm and finally eating after 1 am is not very efficient. Hiro's do still have it fun atmosphere. Another change I notice is the attire of the staff. Staff attire used to be very uniformed and the guys making the sushi all wore traditional smocks but now it looks like they can were what ever they want giving it the feel of Hiro's being just another sushi place. The Sushi: I received my sushi just as I requested HOT. That was the most spicy sushi I have ever had and I love it. The sushi was not fishy smelling but was perfect. The only dissapointment was the presentation. It looked like the sushi was rushed to put together and was coming apart as I was trying to eat it. I remember well put together the sushi was. 3 years ago I would have given Hiro's 5 stars, I can't give it a 4 cause I had more than just a couple of dissapointments. I will difinitely have to come again but this time during dinner hours and will do an update review.

I try to avoid this place at all costs. I love the idea of late night half priced sushi. I love that the location is far enough from downtown that it's not right in the middle of everything. Overall, though, it's more of a club than a place to go for an enjoyable dining experience. The music practically blows through your ear drums. And the sushi is not very fresh. Half price sushi is not enough for me to return here.

I used to come here just for convenience, even though food was average, but now I will never go again after they were featured on ABC's Dirty Dining. I'm really upset that I ate at this place with their discussing, unsanitary conditions.

Half of Sushi and apps is a fantastic deal. We always order to go because it gets super noisy and becomes a mad house for sit in service during half off hours. Not to mention the service can be annoyingly slow. The only thing I've ever been disappointed with was their beef & asparagus app.. Besides that, the sushi is yummy!

Delicious food, but while I was sitting at the sushi bar, the obnoxious bar back did nothing but complain about the owner to an employee who recently walked out during work. unprofessional, to say the least. My waiter was new, his first day, and he was excellent. Very attentive, as well as the staff making the sushi.

After making a star appearance on dirty dining (and being shut down), you would think the owners would make more of an effort to provide good service and a clean environment...think again. Tried to call for carryout, the young woman who answered the phone asked me to repeat myself six times, and then asked me if the Phoenix roll was cooked or not??? Apparently, the employees do not have responsibility for knowing the menu. Nice job management! Your training program is clearly paying off. I guess we'll call for delivery instead. I wonder what restaurant is going to lease that space after Hiro's goes out of business (again) in the near future. - Another lost customer

Came for lunch at 1230pm on a weekday. Entire Resturant was closed. There was no explanation. Several cars were out waiting. We all ended up leaving. Disappointed.

We used to go all the time. Then came all the food violations and fines.... We quit going for a year. Just tried it again and didn't even sit down and walked out after less than a minute. We walked in and asked for a Hibachi table. It was 6 pm. The lady at the front told us the only chef they had just quit and she's trying to get him on the phone and "negotiate" his return to work. I thought it was a joke at first, but it wasn't. I wondered even if she could get him back, how good would the food be being prepared by a disgruntled employee. Do not go to Hiros. It's a mess from management to servers to cost to cleanliness. Save yourself the aggravation and potential food poisoning. You'd be better off eating day old egg-salad.

My girl and I have been looking for a place to obtain wasabi tobiko as a stand along appetizer. Prior to discovering what Hiro's deems the 'Hydrogen Bomb', we would go to Bern's to get these wonderful emerald gems. Hiro's has high calibre sushi at a great price point. Remember to spend the extra $10 to obtain a lifetime 20% off VIP card to use at any future visits. It'll pay for itself in no time!

This review is solely based on the service we recieved. It was a Wednesday night with hardly any business. We received our first round of drinks without hesitation but that's the last bit of quality service we received. Our appetizers took about thirty minutes to reach the table and that was only after asking for them. We waited about the same amount of time four our second glass of wine. I think I could have had two glasses in the time that elapsed. But then they didn't have shiraz. Is that something the server should've known? I guess not. My first sushi roll came around ten minutes before my friend's roll did, though we ordered at the same time. Are you catching my drift? The icing on the cake was when my friend's card was ran for both of our bills, and our server took about ten minutes to fix it. Long enough for me to write this review. In conclusion, everyone around us had fair to good service as far as I can tell but my friend and I were both very disappointed and hangry due to the poor service. At least I only spent $29.35 for my meal.

Went this evening just to discover that they no longer do late night half off sushi. The experience got worse from there. The server forgot an order, it took extremely long to get our drinks, on top of being incorrect the first time they came out and had to wait again. And to top it off our bill came out incorrect not honoring the half off drinks. Overcharging us $16.00. Being in the service industry our group was extremely understanding but once the bill was incorrect and we had to wait again, the night was a disappointment. We used to love coming here for half off late night but we won't be coming here anymore. Definitely not worth the poor service at a full price.

Went to Hiros last night to get a couple beers and Beef fried rice. I was just telling the bartender how the food has not been too good lately. They were going to have the best chef they have make this meal for me. Well, after two bites, a cockroach comes from the pike of rice and takes off across the counter. Manager catches it and states they are two days from their monthly spray. Never will I go back to this dump. It's totally filthy inside and out and nothing but gold teeth you punks in the kitchen.

I still enjoy coming here for half price sushi when I visit St. Petersburg. Any night after 10pm, the maki rolls, hand rolls and kitchen appetizers are all half price. To wash it down you can get a half price martini, cocktail, beer or sake. Every drink I have had here has been amazing. The past two drinks I indulged in were the Hello Kitty and the Pomegranate Appletini. I agree with the other Yelpers, the service is painfully slow. So, relax- get a drink and appetizer- both of those come out fairly quick. This past visit I ordered a new roll, the Lollipop Roll and it was fantastic. No rice and it is wrapped in cucumber with a special dipping sauce. A bit of advice- if you are planning on stopping by for half price sushi then get there right at 10 pm. The place fills up fast- parking and seating! Also, bring a sweater- its freezing in here! Te music can be a bit loud (or deafening) and the lighten is extremely dim (some people pull out cell phones to read the menu)!

came here cause it was close to home and had a friend that works here. sad to say service was slow, even when business was slow.. Some sushi were good, but most of it didn't taste fresh. I like my sushi fresh.. probably won't be eating here anymore.

Great food, but a bit of a lackluster hibachi show. I went for a friend's birthday/going away party and we sat at the hibachi table. I decided to be a rebel and ended up ordering Yakisoba vegetables, while nearly everyone else got some form of hibachi. We arrived about 8 p.m. on a Saturday, and I really debated waiting until 10 p.m. for half off sushi. I couldn't wait, which is why I got the Yakisoba. Like I stated earlier, the Hibachi performance was a little lacking. Maybe it is because I recently went to Koizi and had an extremely energetic Hibachi chef. Either way, the preparation of the food was still a fun show, just nothing special. On the other hand, the Yakisoba was delicious! I couldn't stop talking about how good it was. I would come back again and again for the Yakisoba. The noodles had a great taste to them and the vegetables were cooked perfectly. I would give the Yakisoba 5 stars hands down. Also, on Saturdays, they have half off bottles of wine. Three of my other friends and I got a bottle and ended up each spending about $3 for two glasses of wine. It seemed like every night they have a drink special, which I can appreciate. The atmosphere is pretty cool. On the website, they have pictures when the place is packed. I heard that it gets pretty full. However, we were there until a little after midnight and it never really took off. A DJ did start playing music right at 10 p.m. on the dot. On a side note, I was also told that this is the place where all the Asians go. When I first moved to the Tampa Bay area I was trying to find other Asian Americans. I was constantly directed to Hiro's, though I never went. For the record, there are definitely more Asians here then I've seen anywhere else. However, I don't think making friends in a club/lounge atmosphere really works out well.

Service: craptastic. Our waitress was either spacing out, or brand new. I think we saw the runner more than her. As nice as she was...waiting 10 minutes for our first glasses of water is weak. Food: Brother got the hibachi chicken and shrimp meal. $25 or so. Really?? Maybe if you sit at the grill, it's worth the $25, but with no 'show' that was overpriced. Especially since the fried rice sucked, chicken was dry, and only flavor came from the yum yum sauce on the side. Mom ordered terriyaki chicken. Same thing...overpriced dry chicken, with only source of flavor coming from drizzled terriyaki sauce. Shrimp potsticker app--avoid. Straight from your local freezer aisle. I ordered sushi...can't remember what kind. Obviously forgettable, and once again, I had to rely heavily on a condiment to give it some flavor. Thank you, soy sauce. Ambience: the place is dirty and dark. Maybe after 10 it feels mysterious and hip. But at 6, it felt like a shabby little cave. Saving grace: none of us felt sick afterwards! Hey...when you eat crappy food adn there are dust bunnies on the table...one has to be prepared to pray to the porcelain gods around 0200.

Hiro's has pretty good sushi. It also has a great 1/2 price menu after 10pm. I love getting filled up on sushi for a good price like this. The only downside I find is at night. After 10pm the music gets turned up (Thurs, Fri, Sat, and Sun is loudest) and makes a dinner you plan on holding a conversation at nearly impossible. Also, they hire a bouncer on weekends who is a total Ed Hardy wearing tool! Get past all this, though, and sushi delight awaits.

I was excited to try this place for the first time. The service was decent. The food was good. I had crab Rangoon, a salmon skin hand roll (ick) and 2 other rolls. We live an hour away and about 1/2 way home my stomach started hurting. I began to have lower abdominal cramps that left me on the bathroom floor in agony the entire night while my panicked boyfriend was doing his best to make me comfortable. Needless to say it's been 40 hours and I'm still suffering from debilitating stomach cramps. Not only will I never eat there again, But I sadly am done with sushi forever.

A smart and mid-sized restaurant that anchors one end of a small neat and clean strip mall I was impressed by both the food and staff (which seems to be a wonderful community of young vibrant collegiate boys and girls who are very no nonsense in their delivery of the food and drink - but appear to truly serve up sincere smiles each time they came to our table.) In a unique, but not uncommon, way of ordering - a plastic menu is presented and decisions are subtlely checked off with a wipe-away-marker which I think has the added dimension of making every menu brand spanking clean and antiseptic when it enters your hands. My eyes for once were too big for my belly so we over ordered, but the great prices meant my wallet didn't take a hit. Each and every bite was delicious. This appears to be a place that many of the younger college set and military dudes take over - but hey there is a whole lot more worse than looking at buffed boys with extra size biceps while dining, now isn't there?!

My bf and I used to get sushi here a lot. Within the past 6-8 months it has drastically changed. First off it stunk like wet dog once you opened the front door. How am I supposed to eat raw sushi with that stench?! Thankfully the sushi is still decent. Rolls seemed smaller tho. Sadly disappointed after last nights experience.

I know I should be writing about food, but this Oriental Crush drink is fantastic!!! The sushi list is pretty impressive here too. I have heard that after 10pm you can score lots of stuff for 50% off regular prices. We did not go late night and I honestly think we paid too much for the drinks, but I say that almost everywhere we go. I will be back since it's very close to home but I can't say anything completely amazing about the service or food.

I've been here plenty of times for late night half off sushi & drinks. Great deal! The only problem is that it takes literally forever to get your food. I think I've waited close to 45 minutes. But since the atmosphere at night is more for a partying/lounge/bar, I guess you can't expect much. It gets packed. And I suppose time could fly by if you're downing drinks while having fun with your friends. The last time I did go here, though, I went for a hibachi dinner. Everyone in my family are huge fans of Japanese hibachi, so we frequent different restaurants. I've heard all the jokes, seen all the tricks, so it's a little challenging to impress me. However, our chef did pull out some new stuff on me, so I gotta give props for that. Good interaction and entertainment. Food was pretty good, too, especially my shrimp. I probably won't go back for hibachi just because it's so far from me, and I could easily get the same kind of tasty food at a closer hibach place. But I know I'll be back for late nights. Just can't beat that deal. For girls (or guys) that like fruity drinks: order the oriental crush. It has fruit in it!

If you don't mind how packed it is most nights and the slow service this is the place to go! They have half off sushi after a certain hour and I think thats what brings people back. It's a great place to have late night sushi and just be in a party environment. I wouldn't say I would go back to this place on my own will but if others want to go I can't say no. This place is a not a place you want to go on a date but rather a place to grab some sushi and wander around. You can either be placed at the bar or their teppanyaki tables. The service is really bad. You will probably have to wait awhile to be seated and even longer to even get your food. It's either so packed that the servers can't keep up or they just aren't trained properly. Be prepared to wait, esp if you have a large party!

So the sushi rolls were decent, the miso was tasty, and the service was acceptable on a Tuesday late afternoon. And now I'm out of good things to say. There are advertisements EVERYWHERE for other businesses. On flat-panel TVs, in the bathrooms, on the tables and walls. Chipped paint on the walls, cracks in the tables and chairs, and absolutely filthy restrooms. I've been to my share of dive bars and I'm okay with it being a little dirty (it IS a bathroom), but there were puddles everywhere. Gross. There were a bunch of servers hanging out in what looked like an unfinished area next to the bar, too. Doing homework, checking Facebook on their laptops, that sort of stuff. Wow.

Seriously this is the cheesiest restaurant I have been to in forever, and LOVED it! I just thought I was going for late night sushi. What I walked into was a booming club, with dining and karaoke, LOL. I was confused at first if I should be dancing in the aisle or trying to make dinner conversation. Everyone at my table liked their sushi, including me (Mexican Roll, staple fav.). However..they were not as keen on the quirkiness of the place. I think it takes a special kinda person to love this place like I do..meaning a FUN person!

The wait is long, the service is slow, and the food and drinks are overpriced at Hiro's. The whole Hibachi concept is a bit lame to me. I am just not a fan of paying $15 for stirfry. The performance and the jokes are just embarrassing. I feel everyone only needs to experience the Hibachi table once in life and then you have fulfilled your Hibachi requirement. I also dislike leaving the restaurant smelling like a Hibachi grill! I gave Hiro's three stars because despite the overpriced menu and the slow service, the cocktails and sushi are good. While the sushi is good, there are better options in the area. My advice? If you like sushi: go to the bar and order drinks and sushi. The service will be faster and you won't have to wait for a table.

I went late night Friday to check out the half-price sushi and drinks. I'm a sucker for deals and sushi. My boyfriend and I ordered a selection of sushi (Arizona Roll, Soft-shell Crab Roll, Mexican Roll, Nitro Eel Roll), which is all half price after 10 p.m. We also ordered conch sashimi (his favorite) and salmon roe (my favorite). These were not half price. We had Bud Light drafts, which were half price. While all of the sushi is decent, there is definitely better in the area. But, I don't know of any sushi restaurants that are open until 3 a.m. or that offer half-price sushi and drinks. For that reason, I'd definitely go back here. It's nice to have a late-night food option besides fast food or diners. My favorite was the salmon roe. It is always my favorite, and honestly, I've never had any I didn't like. Among the rolls, Arizona was definitely my favorite. It was fresh and had great flavor. The other rolls did not stand out in any way to me. All were OK, but nothing spectacular. We went around midnight on a Friday, and the music was loud. It was almost a nightclub atmosphere: dark lighting and a younger, party crowd. It was kind of fun for a Friday night, but if you're looking for a quiet meal, this isn't your place.

it's "ok" if there isn't better sushi in the area. we had lunch special and the miso soup was a bit salty and rolls were ok. I get great sushi in the Japanese parts of Los Angeles so to be quite honest, if I'm craving sushi on my next visit I will drive to one of the better Yelp rated sushi spots in surrounding cities. Sushi needs to be fresh and well made and usually is worth paying a little extra for. Since the restaurant also offers hibachi they don't put their focus on making a good food well, but rather accomodating masses of customers. Real Japanese sushi restaurants do sushi only and the same goes for other Japanese specialties like Shabu-Shabu, Ramen Noodles, etc.

It's a hibachi restaurant much more than a sushi place IMO, and it's good at it. $2 Corona all day and $2 drafts also. The hibachi scallops and chicken were delicious. Steamed dumpling appetizer was so so as was the edamame, but the hibachi chef Taro, was awesome and the hibachi food was delicious.

I was in the mood of sushi today, so I thought I would try Hiro's. This is a mistake I will never make again! While the sushi appetizer was great, the service was appalling. I went in at about 2:30 p.m. and no one greeted me at the door. This was not that big of a deal as the restaurant was very slow with only about three tables. However, I stood there for about two minutes and not even the sushi chiefs said a word to me. I eventually, just walk up to the sushi bar and sat myself. A few minutes my server server, we will call her "P" came by and took my drink order. She came back a few minutes later just to tell me they were out of Coke, so I ordered Iced-Tea instead. I did get my drink relativity quickly, and I placed my order for the sushi appetizer. She places my order and comes right back a few minutes later and ask what else I would like. Then, this conversation transpired. Me: "I am not sure, everything looks so good. This is my first time here, what would you recommend that is going to blow me away?" P: "Nothing, we do not have any type of specialty rolls. All of our rolls are very basic." Me: "Oh...well then what is popular?" P: "The TNT and ( I can not remember the second one she told me) Me: "Ok, well I think I am going to need a few more minutes." P: "Ok, but I have to leave by three," then she walked away. A few moments later, my appetizer arrives and my tea is at the refill point. She dropped of the appetizer and never asked if I wanted a refill. After that I finished my appetizer sucked on my ice and cashed out. I will never go back there again.

Rolled in late last night, just before 10 pm. If only my hunger could have waited, I would have had sushi for half price! I ordered the St Pete Roll (spicy octopus, squid, avocado) and eel nigiri. Both were great! I would definitely go here again. Bonus: they are open late!

Hiro's late night half-off sushi special is probably one of the best things ever. I tried a number of rolls on my visit there and I'd say they put too much sauce on the rolls. Avoid that if you really want a fresh taste. The California Roll, the only roll I had without some kind of mayo or topping thrown on the sushi was the best one I had. The Crab Ragoon Roll was probably my second favorite roll after their California Roll. Service is slower and night and if you're in a large party be prepared to wait quite awhile for you food. Service is pretty good even at a late hour and if they make mistakes they take responsibility. The bar is booming at night with people which is pretty cool. Overall a pretty cool place.

the sushi was mehh....but don't judge it on that, i am super picky with sushi. the service was descent. 2 for 1 hot sake was a bonus, we had a few rounds! the food was really good. sat at a hibachi table and was pleased that the 3 of of didn't have to sit with a bunch of strangers. we are used to going to arigiatos and having to sit with strangers so this was a nice change although it was pretty slow the night we went so i imagine it's not always like that....we went around 8pm on a tuesday night. i do like the setup of the tables better though as they were smaller than the ones at arigatos which i'm thinking means less likely to have strangers sit with you. ordered the filet (med. rare), scallops and shrimp...all tasted great! typical japanese steakhouse prices = not cheap.

First time I went, I loved the place and gave an initial 4 star rating. I enjoyed it so much, I decided to book a party of 10 for my nephews 18th bday. We were in a hibatchi room. Service started off very slow. It was a rainy night and when we walked in, we saw a huge leak in the ceiling and it was dripping water on a table in the next room with people in it. We ordered sushi as appetizers and waited for our table side cook. As we sat there, we saw 3 german cocaroaches scurry by. Typically, when you see one, there are hundreds waiting in the shadow. The cook finally came to the table. At that point we were grossed out but couldn't leave. We told the cook what we saw. He made a joke and said that if he saw them again, he would chop them up and put them in our food. He also said, when the heat is turned on the stove, where all the food shavings go, they don't like the heat. So apparently this is common??? This is a dirty dining experience! You are supposed to maintain under hoods and under the cook tables. Our experience was just sub par even without the roaches. It was sad because the first time I went I really enjoyed the place. I will never go back. There are far cleaner places with better service.

So happy to find a restaurant that is open past midnight. Half off apps were great, sushi rolls all tasted the same but not bad. Nice wine and drink list. I met a friend and I thought it was a bit loud with the music but hey, everyone seemed to be having a great time and Ill def go back!!

The staff in general at this location is horrible; I hate to be so blunt, but it is truly the case. We waited 45 minutes to be sat, while other parties got seated before us; we ended up sitting at the bar, where you do not need to wait at all. Happy to be seated, we looked over the menu and were happy to be informed by the bartender that after a certain time certain items on the menu as well as drinks are half off. Our waitress was a disaster, she would bring us a menu but no marker, (you indicate with a marker on the menu what you would like to order) or she would make up answers to questions we had regarding the food. Another tip, don't sit at the bar side behind the hostess, neither the employees nor the guests have the decency to notice you are eating; we had people leaning on our chairs and ordering over our food. Not to mention the loud techno music playing; thought my meel was going to come out with a glow stick. I guess being very familiar with the other Hiro locations in Miami, we were just spoiled to overall good quality.. What a waste of money! (Have not been able to get a positive answer, but when I asked the managers at the Hiro locations in Miami, they were either too embarressed to admit they were under the same ownership ot perhaps they are really not and just share the name) AVOID AT ALL COSTS, TRUST ME ON THIS ONE!

I have been to this place many many times and each time I go it's always top-notch and very affordable. They have several hibachi tables, a sushi bar, a regular bar, plenty of regular seating and an amazing atmosphere with HD LCD TV's above the bar a hard wood floor and just an overall high-class japanese styling. The sushi and hibachi are very very good! And they also have a late night menu from 10pm - 4am (no drinks after 2am). After 10pm EVERY night they have half-price sushi, drinks, and appetizers. You cannot beat this! Go check it out and be impressed! It usually fills up from 8pm on. You can even call for reservations.

    1) We were seated at the bar and assured we would get faster service there instead of at a table. Not so much. 2) The employees completely ignored us after getting us our drinks. They were not busy, they were just too focused on making sure their friends at the bar got free drinks and food and joking around with their friends to notice lowly customers like us. (Really - who did they stand to get the biggest tips from I wonder?) 3) A couple was also at the bar and their food came out very slow. They complained after the bartenders walked away that this was not a place to order food, you should just come here to hang out. The service always sucks, they said. 4) Food came out for me, but my sister's food did not come out for a long time, so we asked the female bartender what was up. She was very rude, did not apologize or offer any info on when the order might be up. Meanwhile, it was less than 10 minutes to closing. 5) When the sushi chef brought over two plates of food for his friends and offered it to them, they didn't want it, so he just chucked it right in the garbage right in front of us. Guess what one of the items was? The same thing my sister ordered and was waiting on. How would that make you feel to see what looks like your order get offered to someone for free and then tossed out right in front of you? 6) Aside from the crappy service, the employees were extremely unprofessional. I witnessed at least 4 employees texting on cell phones right in front of us and ignoring us while doing so, a sushi chef's boxers were completely visible outside his pants - his pants were down below his rear (appetizing? NOT!), same guy was also wearing huge headphones on his head and several employees cursing. I cannot emphasize enough how many times we and the actual customers around us were completely ignored while the employees focused on talking to their friends. 7) When we asked for the food that did not come out to be removed from the bill, we were met with an argument from the female bartender. She again did not apologize and was very defensive and argumentative. 8) Andy, the male bartender noticed our argument with the female bartender and stepped in asking what was wrong and apologized. He took care of the rest of our service - the only silver lining tonight (thank you again Andy). Instead of being humble and walking away, the female bartender came up beside him when he was apologizing and didn't even look at us and started yelling that we were wrong about my sister's order being thrown away and that the food was for their friends who didn't want it. She then walked away with again no apology. 9) OK, the food that we actually did get came out great tonight. However, the lack of service, unprofessionalism and rude attitude spoiled the whole thing.

The reason why I go back is late night 50% off sushi. The quality of food is just okay... I would not wanna pay full price for them. 50% off...yea its not bad. The service....Horrible!!! One black security guy who works at this place is an absolute jerk. Do not engage!!! And waiters and waitresses.... I like the two Asian girls who work there....very nice and attentive. But the rest...not good at all. I have gotten a horrible service one time....it was so bad that i did not tip at all for the first time in my life. So please do not expect a good service here at all...if you are lucky you will have one of the few good waitresses. Its usually very packed for the half off hours. And they have very loud music. What a turn-off when you are trying to eat sushi and have a conversation. Since Ocean Blue is open in Clearwater with late-night, I don't think many people go to Hiro's anymore. I certainly have not been there for a while now.

This is possibly the worst sushi place in Pinellas County. It's a wannabe night club slash sushi restaurant. Most nights it's crowded and is blasting terrible music. The bad part is even when it's slow and not crowded, be prepared to wait FOREVER for subpar sushi. The last time we went there we waited 35 minutes to be seated in a half empty restaurant, only to wait over an hour and a half for our food. By the time the food got there it was soggy and ice cold.... So not only did it take forever they left it sitting in the window for god knows how long, even with us asking multiple times. We didn't eat it and refused to pay and got attitude from the waitress who clearly didn't care. Do not eat here, even if you do want sushi at 1am... Not worth it

I have been living in St. Pete for about a year now and have eaten at quite a few sushi bars. I have to say this one is definitely my favorite in terms of food. My girlfriend and I ALWAYS go for half-price sushi, which starts every night at 10 p.m. Looking for a sushi roll to get? Their TNT is phenomenal. I never leave unsatisfied and am always full. The only downside to this place is that once it's 10 p.m., the music is BLASTED throughout the restaurant. If I wanted music that loud I would go to a club or concert. And it gets pretty packed so get there early. But it is a small price to pay for great food and good service. Now I am hungry.

Came to Florida for a business trip and being a sushi fan I wanted to try this place out. I came during late night happy hour and I felt like I walked into a lounge. The lights were dimmed and the music was bumpin'. Upon walking in the first I thing I see is the hostess desk and behind them a large bar with seating on three sides. I thought it was pretty neat. Anyways, the restaurant has different sections for seating; one for the regular menu, another section for hibachi, and then the other side for some more regular menus. Did I mention that late night happy hour is half off sushi, drinks and apps! FYI: If you're looking for a nice, quiet eat your food and go, place this isn't it. Beware that service may be slow but the food is on point! I started the night with a tall glass of Sangria with a shot of Grand Marnier. I love GM in Sangrias! If you haven't tried it yet, it is a MUST TRY DRINK! The bartender that night made it to perfection, not too fruity not too bland. I think I had about 3 or 4 before I ended the night. For app we tried to spicy tuna volcano which was mmm mmm good the heat was mild and the sauce was oh soo yummy. I loved the slices of jalapenos, so if you're into spicy I suggest trying this. For my main dish I had the volcano roll... this was not 8 pieces but like 10 or 12! The inside was California roll and on top was a bunch of crab meat and spicy mayo all over. Paying half the price was pretty much worth it. Next time I'm in Florida I'll be ordering this all over again.

Best restaurant I have been to eat really good sushi, wide variety of sushi and other Japanese appetizers. They have karaoke thurdays nights and it gets really busy! Every night they have sushi for a half price. My favorite place to go when I am craving sushi!!

Great half price selection after ten. The service is usually great and the sushi is delicious! It would be a bit pricey for the quality of the meal if you were going without taking advantage of the after ten deal. My only complaint is how loud the music is after ten. You can't hear yourself think! But overall, this is a great place to visit.

We stopped by on a recommendation from a local. "half priced sushi" should say it all. 1. Service was beyond slow. 1 hour, 10 minutes from the time we ordered till the fish came. Even the waitress felt bad as she offered salad or miso soup 'on her'. 2. Sloppy rolls that were not very discernible from each other. 3. I got violently ILL the next morning. Coincidence? Perhaps. I am not pointing the finger, but c'mon, I was f&$@ing sick for 10 hours afterwards. Go at your own risk.

Japanese Teriyaki is one of my favorite foods and I was really impressed by Hiro's offering. It was late night and I almost felt healthy eating it. My chicken was a skinless breast lightly coated in teriyaki and I liked it. For $12 I got the whole hibachi fair at a regular table featuring onion soup, ginger salad, rice and veggies. I had plenty left over for lunch the next day. My friend got Sushi and was content. Service was super-duper friendly and my food came out really fast. The atmosphere was very modern and interesting, it can be a little too dark and sometimes I had trouble hearing when the music goes to club level after 10pm...but I like the music, and prices on sushi and drinks are half off, sooo I deal with it.

I only go here for half off sushi after 10pm. It's the only way to justify paying for the bad quality of their rolls. Try to be seated right before 10pm so the service is a bit faster because after 11pm the place gets packed and you may have to wait 45+ minutes to be seated. Don't forget to factor in the 1hr plus it takes for your order to arrive because the service is soooooo slow when it gets crowed. Also parking at 11pm on the weekend is a real drag since Hiro's shares a lot with World of Beers and a couple of spots are reserved for Valet service.

I know this place is known for their late night specials, but we went for first time on a Tuesday before the 10 pm specials. We had 4 rolls and all were great, with spicy tuna always being a personal favorite. Drinks were a bit pricey but guess that's why you should stick with the drink specials. I thoughout the atmosphere was pretty neat and want to try the hibachi one day. The wait staff we dealt with was very friendly and recommended coming later and on other nights for drink and sushi specials, along with music. I will definitely give it a try on the weekend.

Myself and my sales manager stopped at Hiro's to try some of the Tampa Bay Sushi between sales calls. At around noon, the entire restaurant was empty... This may have been the first indication that something was going to be a miss. We sat down and were greeted, the waitress was very nice, but that was about the extent of the enjoyment. When we ordered, we both ordered different roll combinations (at $16 per combination, we were expecting something pretty good)! It took almost 20 minutes for our rolls to get to us, when they did, they were very small but tightly wrapped. After the meal, it took a while to grab our waitresses attention (again, we were the only people at the restaurant) and pay our bill less than satisfied. I feel two stars is appropriate because I did not get sick, but I was not full after "eight" sushi rolls.

I've been twice. The first time was fantastic and the sushi was yummy. Service was slow but I love dinner conversations so slow service isn't a deal breaker. However food poisoning IS a deal breaker!! The second time I went I ordered 3 sushi rolls and was sick for about 2 days. My friend that ate off my plate was also sick as well. I am not a fan of food poisoning from sushi. It was hell. I don't think that I'll ever go back. I am sad because it is super close to my house and really, really tasty.

My other review still stands for this place if you go during normal dinner hours. I really do think the sushi is great when they're on their game, but one night we decided to go here very late at night because we knew they were open a lot later than most other restaurants and supposedly had half price sushi after 10pm. So, at 1am we show up and all the staff are standing outside shooting the breeze. 1am is not that late for this place since they're supposed to be open until 3am. We got this look when we went in the door kind of like "oh, please go away". We went inside and the place was absoutely trashed. It looked like a college party just got busted up and everyone had run out and left the mess. There was blaring music and junk everywhere. This HUGE guy approached us asking if he could help us. He was nice enough, but he was clearly the bouncer for whatever was just going on before we got there. There were no patrons in the restaurant, only staff, and no one was even attempting to clean up. It was clear that they were done serving for the night. Even if they had been willing to serve us at that point, which they clearly were not, we would have left. Now I understand the mixed reviews. I suspect the folks who rate this place highly (like I did in my previous review) went during "normal" dinner times and those who rated it very low (like this review) went late at night. Read my other review, and just be warned. Go before 10pm and pay full price for your sushi if you want a descent restaurant and descent service. Late at night, who knows what you'll get. We certainly won't be back for late night service.

Sushi take FOREVER to make I guess. Maybe they go to the ocean that same night take it to the kitchen and serve you. Idk. BUT.... if you are going with a bunch of friends or a romantic date and NOT in a rush, then cool. Nice set up. Kind of reminds me of a club/bar. Has a bar. Lot of asians go, but I went on tuesday, mostly white. Not too diverse crowd. The food was good. I like cooked, so I got bubba roll and my sour apple vodka was off the hook! I ordered two since the meal took...a bit... but I had fun chillin laughing with my girls. Everyone dresses nice to go there too. So I always like that.

If the restaurant was cleaner and the wait staff was better they would get a 5/5 but there sushi is so good they deserve at least a 4/5

SLOW SLOW SLOW.. did I mention SLOW. I have tried to go there 3 times, 2 of those just ended in frustration and me leaving to go to a good sushi bar .. IE SUSHI ROCK 1 mile south. The first time took 45min to get food, I was with a friend so other than feeling ignored by the waitress I had good company to talk too. The second time I went alone sat at the bar.... 55 min to get sushi!!! Common seriously? The owner needs to decide if he's running a night club or a sushi bar? The third time I figure, maybe they just had a bad night. Went there at 10am sharp, the sushi would ONLY take 30 they said to make, but they did not have a seat for one. It was UFC fight night? WTF.. are guess they would rather sell drinks to kids than make money selling sushi. Point and Fact, if you like sushi stay away from here. If your poor and need to get half price sushi and you dont mind waiting 1hr for 3 rolls and you want to feel like your eating on a dance floor rather than a sushi bar.. than this is your place. St Pete, residents should know better than to go here for food, it's a joint that cant decide if they want to sell drink to the kids or of they want to try to be a serious sushi bar for anyone over 21.

Worst service ever. We're told 15 minute wait and don't get seated for over an hour. Order food and an hour and 15 minutes later it's still not there. Our waiter was awful. Had to go to the bar to get cups to drink sake out of. Had to point out what I ordered off the menu since he claimed it wasn't something they served. Eventually had to cancel our order and eat fast food since they never even brought our soup or salad in 75 minutes after ordering. When the hostess asked who our waiter was and we said "guy who seems really dumb and can't get a single part of our order right" she said "I know exactly who you mean" Then the manager came out and said we could cancel our order and not pay for anything and laughed as we told him all our complaints.

This has definitely got to be one of the best sushi restaurants that I have ever been too. They do have the hibachi tables a la Benihana, but I have never eaten at one so I can't really comment on them. The only thing keeping me from giving it 5 stars is that each time I have been there I have frozen my chop sticks off and the service has been touch and go.

LOVE this place. We tried it lastnight for the first time. The 1/2 price sushi and appetizers after 10pm is wonderful. Our server forgot to bring our food out and they have Pepsi products rather than Coke ... but other than that, it's amazing! I even ran into an old friend on the way out. It was quiet and slow before 10 and then the music started, lights were dimmed and the place filled up. Really a great hang out spot and great deal on the food!

Place is good, after 10:00pm they start half off most drinks and most sushi. This is the only reason I am rating 3 stars. Please be warned, the food take FOREVER!!! Especially after 10pm. It turns into a whole different atmosphere, they turn the music up really loud, people literally stuff themselves in the door. Just talk to my girl Penny at the bar, she'll hook ya up!

Half off sushi, apps and drinks after 10 is an amazing deal, I usually order the chicken tempura appetizer, stir-fry tofu and a couple rolls for about $15... can't beat that. the Late night service usually sucks but its still well worth it. I also recommend the sexy roll, caterpillar roll, and the mixed drinks are actually very unique and delicious.

The atmosphere and music make up for the average rolls. The yellowtail and jalapeño appetizer was the best thing I ordered. Would come back, but still searching for great sushi in St. Pete.

Just went to this place last night. Worst service ever and it took an hour to be served !!!! I have to admit the music was good the place looked decent ....but if your service sucks its hard to make up for it!!! Beware if the waitstaff doesn't tell you about the half price sushi (it doesn't include the whole menu) you'll have to argue about your bill at the end of the night.!!

Like other's my complaints are similar. On a saturday night we waited for our order for over an hour. Once our order came in they forgot two but still charged us for them. They did correct our bill but were disappointed cause we knew it wasn't worth another hour to order more sushi. Also note that only the rolls are half price and not the whole menu after 10pm. Overall the sushi was average and an ok value considering the beer was also half price. My suggestion is to go after 10pm and order right away when seated then sit back and relax and have a couple of apps and drinks. Don't expect fast service or you'll be disappointed.
